Biography
Norway's experimental black metal act Ved Buens Ende, whose name translates roughly to "beyond the bow" or "beyond the rainbow," counted multi-instrumentalist Carl-Michael Elde among its numerous participants. The group forged a singular hybrid that merged post-rock guitar textures with spectral crooning vocals and jazz-inflected drumming plus bass lines, producing an overall character that felt simultaneously restrained and enigmatic on one hand and forceful on the other, an identity that continued to stand apart long after their final recordings.
Elde handled drums and lead vocals under the alias Czral and had appeared in Dodheimsgard, Aura Noir, Cadaver Inc., and Virus among further projects; guitarist Vicotnik, also called Aggressor or Mr. Fixit and at times affiliated with Dodheimsgard and Aura Noir, completed the core alongside bassist Skoll, whose given name is Hugh Stephen James Mingay and who had played with Ulver and Arcturus. After the demo Those Who Caress the Pale, the trio joined the British Misanthropy roster and issued their sole full-length album, Written in Waters, in 1995. That demo later resurfaced in 1997 augmented by bonus tracks. Although late-1990s reports suggested an eventual reunion for a second album, no such recording occurred, perhaps owing to the musicians' extensive outside commitments. In the early 2000s Elde announced the formation of Virus, which he described as a continuation of his Ved Buens Ende work.
