The five musicians Erik Chapman, Joseph Childres, Justin Cronk, Zach Davidson, and Mike Vermillion launched Vendetta Red in 1998. Their sound drew chiefly from the dominant grunge sound of the mid-nineties and from the taut, emotionally charged approach of Sunny Day Real Estate. Vendetta Red independently issued the EP 6 Kisses a Blatant Reminder of Why We Are Alive in 1999 and spent that year playing shows along the West Coast. The following year the group delivered its first full-length effort, Blackout Analysis. White Knuckled Substance arrived in October 2001 and earned steady local radio play. Impressed by the band’s drive, Epic Records signed Vendetta Red to a recording contract in early 2002. Later that year the members entered the studio with producer Jerry Finn (blink-182, Green Day, Sum 41) to cut what would become their fourth album. Between the Never and the Now reached stores in June 2003; afterward the band embarked on an extensive North American tour that featured several dates on that summer’s Warped Tour. The ambitious Sisters of the Red Death surfaced in August 2005, and the group disbanded the following spring.
