Wesley Gonzalez, a singer and songwriter from Britain, initially built recognition as the cryptic frontman of Let's Wrestle, the sharp-tongued London trio whose melodic yet off-kilter punk sound drew critical praise and a loyal cult following across three albums, notably the Steve Albini-produced Nursing Home from 2011. Once that trio split, Gonzalez reinvented his approach as a solo power-pop artist with a dry wit, issuing a pair of distinctively titled LPs—Excellent Musician and Appalling Human—during the second half of the 2010s. After a warmly received joint effort alongside Rose Elinor Dougall, he delivered his third album, the brooding yet forceful Wax Limousine.

At age 15 in 2005, Gonzalez launched Let's Wrestle together with bassist Mike Lightning and drummer Darkus Bishop. The band followed with their first single, "Song for ABBA Tribute Band," in 2007 and went on to earn a reputation for rowdy live shows and cunning songcraft through the three full-lengths In the Court of the Wrestling Let's (2009), Nursing Home (2011), and Let's Wrestle (2014). Over their decade together the group enjoyed only modest sales yet remained a consistent critical favorite before ending with a farewell performance at London's The 100 Club in 2015.

Gonzalez moved swiftly into solo work once the band dissolved, assembling a live unit that featured Euan Hinshelwood from Younghusband and Meilyr Jones. Broadening beyond the guitar-centric sound of his prior project, he explored a blend of classic 1970s pop, soul, and indie rock shaped by Donny Hathaway and Sly & the Family Stone. His first solo album, Excellent Musician, appeared in 2017; three years later, in June 2020, Appalling Human arrived with a comparably varied palette. The 2021 collaboration with Rose Elinor Dougall yielded the buoyant track "Greater Expectations," which later surfaced on his next record. Issued in March 2022, Wax Limousine combined Gonzalez's ever-tighter pop constructions with candid lyrics centered on loss and emotional turmoil.
