Biography
Joe Williams, active as singer, multi-instrumentalist, and graphic designer under the name White Williams, produces whimsical yet fragmented art pop that draws on glam rock’s confident swagger together with electronic playfulness. Back in 1999 he served as drummer for a Cleveland, Ohio noise outfit and shared bills with Black Dice and the Rapture, yet he soon redirected his work toward electronic textures. By 2001 he had launched the project So Red, which joined a circle of artists featuring Girl Talk’s Gregg Gillis and Drop the Lime’s Luca Venezia. Touring with Girl Talk encouraged another shift, this time toward clearer pop forms, increased vocal presence, and greater reliance on drums, keyboard, and guitar. While shaping his recordings he also earned an M.F.A. in graphic design and relocated among Cleveland, Cincinnati, New York, and San Francisco across the two years devoted to his debut album, Smoke. Tigerbeat6 issued that album in late 2007, and Double Six Records followed with a reissue in April 2008.
