During the 1990s and the initial years of the following decade, Gothenburg, Sweden, gained notice as a focal point for underground Scandinavian death metal and black metal acts. Numerous extreme metal groups emerged from this Nordic city, among them Within Y, whose intense and aggressive output merges death metal and black metal with elements of hardcore and metalcore. The band steers clear of grindcore conventions, which emphasize unbroken ultra-high speeds and scant melody; Within Y instead employs frequent tempo shifts alongside melodic touches. Their sound stays highly ferocious, driven in large part by the vocals. Andreas Solveström, the lead vocalist, unleashes frenzied and relentless screams that aim straight for maximum force. His approach avoids the low, rumbling, demonic growls common across death metal, black metal, and grindcore, favoring instead the fierce shouting style associated with metalcore outfits such as Brick Bath, Hatebreed, and Throwdown. In line with most Swedish metal acts, Within Y writes exclusively in English despite hailing from a country where Swedish remains the dominant language.

Within Y formed in February 2002 when Solveström joined forces with guitarists Nikke Almen and Mikael Nordin. Drummer Thim Blom, formerly of the Swedish death metal and black metal band Gardenian led by ex-In Flames guitarist Niklas Engelin, entered the lineup the next month. Bassist Matte Wänerstam soon rounded out the roster. During summer 2002 the group tracked a four-song demo titled Feeble and Weak that attracted reviews in various metal-oriented publications. In 2003 the Swedes laid down their debut full-length album, Extended Mental Dimensions, issued first by the small Dutch label Hammerheart Records throughout Europe and later reaching the United States via Candlelight in March 2004.
