Biography
Fronted by Zakk Wylde—the storied six-string master of hard rock and heavy metal who has served for decades as guitarist to Black Sabbath vocalist Ozzy Osbourne—Zakk Sabbath operates as a tribute ensemble devoted to the pioneering Birmingham group. The unit cut a live EP in 2017 before entering the studio to reinterpret the band’s landmark self-titled debut from 1970; that effort, titled Vertigo, surfaced in 2020. Four years after that release came Doomed Forever Forever Doomed, a double album confronting both Paranoid and Master of Reality.
Wylde assembled the project in 2014 alongside longtime Ozzy bassist Rob “Blasko” Nicholson, whose tenure with Osbourne dates to 2003, and Rob Zombie drummer John Tempesta. Tempesta departed prior to the first recording sessions and was succeeded by Joey Castillo, whose résumé includes Queens of the Stone Age and Danzig. Issued by Southern Lord in 2017, the live document Live in Detroit captured the lineup performing intense versions of the Sabbath staples “War Pigs,” “Supernaut,” and “Fairies Wear Boots.” Three years afterward, Zakk Sabbath issued Vertigo, an expansive studio recreation of Black Sabbath’s 1970 debut marking its fiftieth anniversary. In 2024 Wylde, Nicholson, and Castillo turned their attention to the 1970 album Paranoid and the 1971 follow-up Master of Reality, resulting in the double LP Doomed Forever Forever Doomed.
