8STOPS7 originated in Ventura County, CA, during 1996, when Evan Sula-Goff on vocals and guitar, Seth Watson on guitar, Adam Powell on drums, and Alex Viveros on bass performed together for the first time on February 21, 1997—Sula-Goff’s 21st birthday. After issuing their independently produced debut album Birth of a Cynic on their own in 1998, the group drew interest from several major labels and ultimately signed with Reprise Records, which put out In Moderation in October 1999. The group’s distinctive moniker stems from deliberate numerical symbolism: the “8” evokes the infinity symbol, whereas the seven stands for various restrictive or unlucky associations, including the seven days of the week, seven years of bad luck, and seven plagues. Sula-Goff explained the concept by noting, “Basically, seven is a symbol of something you want to get away from, and eight is the door you go through to get there.” Merging such conceptual ideas with an alternative rock approach and introspective lyrics rendered the band’s deeper reflections readily approachable. Their initial national tour took place across the winter of 1999-2000, coinciding with radio airplay chart success for “My Would-Be Savior” and “Satisfied” on rock stations. Fellow Ventura County musician Aaron Johnson joined on second guitar, expanding the lineup to a quintet.
