After departing the emocore band Further Seems Forever in 2004, Jason Gleason—who had earlier performed with the hardcore outfit Affinity—moved from Florida to New Jersey. There he connected with longtime friend Bella, previously of Element 101. The pair took daytime construction work alongside Salvatore Ciaravino, another former Element member. Joined by a rotating group of friends, the three began nightly jam sessions shaped by influences such as Sunny Day Real Estate, the Smashing Pumpkins, Beck, ELO, and Elbow. Those sessions produced original material and gave rise to the indie rock project ActionReaction. Although all three shared vocal responsibilities, Gleason sang lead and played guitar, Ciaravino handled bass, and Bella covered keyboards. After several local gigs, the band arranged its own release through Hope Division Records, an Equal Vision subsidiary. Their self-titled EP arrived in February 2006 and was sold online as well as during a national tour with Armor for Sleep. The group then entered the studio to cut its first full-length album. Building on the funk-tinged rock approach, 3 Is the Magic Number appeared that August. Roughly a month of shows with Koufax and the Forecast followed the release.
