Following the dissolution of the neo-prog outfit Cathedral, its keyboardist Todd Braverman launched Ad Infinitum. His goal was to revive the sonic character of early-1970s progressive rock in the manner of Yes and Genesis. An advertisement placed in the Village Voice introduced Braverman to guitarist, songwriter, and committed prog devotee Craig Wall. While both maintained assorted daytime employment, the pair recruited keyboardist/vocalist Ilan Goldman. A second advertisement later brought Mike "Goose" Seguso aboard as an extra vocalist. Across four years of joint effort, Ad Infinitum employed instruments largely forsaken by most rock acts yet indispensable to the prog aesthetic, among them Hammond organs, Mellotrons, and Moog synthesizers. The album that resulted fulfilled the original intent exactly, offering an exacting replica of progressive rock’s classic period through expansive compositions, elaborate arrangements, and frequent metric changes.
