Biography
Known professionally as Adaline, Shawna Colleen Beesley writes and performs songs that fuse indie rock with torchy, dark electropop. Ottawa, Canada, marks her birthplace, and her childhood unfolded across multiple locations because her father served as a minister. Music occupied her from an early age, yet she remained disconnected from prevailing trends once songwriting began, given that her conservative household had disallowed pop. Later exposure to contemporary sounds led her to conclude that her atmospheric, textured approach would find its primary outlet in film and television rather than chart success. Consistent with that outlook, placements soon followed in Grey's Anatomy, 90210, and Lost Girl, alongside the short films Fool's Gold in 2006 and False Creek Stories in 2010.
Her first release, the self-issued Famous for Fire from 2008, assembled noir-ish dance and ambient pop material. The kindred Modern Romantics album arrived three years later on Light Organ Records. Additional screen contributions included tracks created with Broken Social Scene's Brendan Canning and Me&John for the 2013 feature The Canyons; in 2014 the title song from her debut received placement on the Syfy series Bitten. A friend’s request for a cover of Genesis’ “Follow You Follow Me” in an animated short produced unexpected reach when Lily and the Snowman screened across Canadian Cineplex theaters throughout the 2015-2016 winter season, exposing the recording to millions of cinema patrons and generating tens of millions of streams. Shortly afterward “Keep Me High” appeared in the 2016 film Below Her Mouth. Written during a seaside retreat, her third album, Aquatic, surfaced on Cadence Records in 2017.
