Aghora originated in 1995 as an uncommon heavy metal project launched by guitarist and programmer Santiago Dobles during his enrollment at the Berklee School of Music together with fellow guitarists Max Dible and bassist Andy Deluca. Relocating to Miami, Florida in 1997, Dobles added his sister Danishta Rivero on vocals and guitarist Charlie Ekendahl. Several years and a series of demos later, the band secured the celebrated rhythm section from progressive death metal pioneers Cynic, bassist Sean Malone and drummer Sean Reinert, who had also performed with Death. Blending Cynic’s trademark compositional inventiveness with Dobles’ jazz fusion guitar approach and Rivero’s clear melodic delivery, Aghora completed its self-titled debut album in 1999. Although Malone, Reinert, and Ekendahl soon pursued separate endeavors, and bassist Alan Goldstein along with drummer Richard Komatz were subsequently named as replacements, Aghora has issued no further recordings.
