Hailing from Padova, Ephel Duath ranks among Italy’s most ambitious heavy metal outfits, fusing death, black, and progressive metal in a style reminiscent of Cynic meeting Solefald. The band originated in 1998 as a studio-only venture launched by the versatile pair Davide Tiso, who handled vocals, guitars, and keyboards, and Giuliano Mogicato, responsible for vocals, guitars, and bass. After moving more than 1,000 units of the “Opera” demo and claiming the top spot on MP3.com’s heavy metal chart through over 20,000 gratis downloads, the duo issued the stylistically unpredictable Phormula in 2000. Critics responded with simultaneous praise and criticism, yet uniformly expressed astonishment. Following a deal with Earache Records’ Elitist imprint, the album was expanded and re-released under the title Rephormula. Ephel Duath’s subsequent release, the far-reaching 2003 set The Painters Palette, pushed further boundaries by weaving in electronics, free jazz, and additional textural elements. Its 2005 successor, Pain Necessary to Know, arrived with Tiso now joined by fresh contributors—vocalists Luciano George Lorusso and Davide Tolomei, bassist Fabio Fecchio, and drummer Davide Piovesan—after Mogicato departed to pursue work with Fields of Asphodel.
