Biography
Allan Rayman, a reclusive voice in indie R&B, cultivated an aura of secrecy across his abbreviated recording span. The Lost Springs, Wyoming native quietly issued his debut self-released album Hotel Allan during 2015, drawing heavy streams via grassroots chatter and cryptic clips styled as miniature films. Now Toronto-based, he extended this elusive persona into concerts, offering soulful vocals atop backing tracks or stripped-down arrangements before retreating to a compact table onstage to sip a beverage while unsettling taped announcements echoed through the sound system. His restrained visibility nonetheless fostered a devoted listenership that welcomed the next dispatch, Roadhouse 01, issued in early 2017 through Communion Records—the label run by Mumford & Sons’ Ben Lovett—an equally off-kilter fusion of R&B, soul, hip-hop, and folk that traces the exploits of the “Mr. Roadhouse” persona. A Juno Award nomination for Breakthrough Artist of the Year arrived in 2018. Later that year came the full-length Harry Hard-On, its name borrowed from the 1990 Christian Slater vehicle Pump Up the Volume; Rayman returned to the same source for thematic inspiration on the 2020 album Christian.
