Biography
Rationale’s singing voice, frequently likened to a fusion of Tracy Chapman and Morrissey, weaves together assorted stylistic threads through his meticulously self-produced work. Early in his trajectory he cultivated an air of enigma, directing focus squarely onto the recordings while keeping his personal identity secondary for a brief period. Born in Harare, Zimbabwe and now London-based, he absorbed his mother’s record collection as a child, took up guitar at nine, and began writing songs during his teenage years. His first recorded vocals surfaced on tracks by Bastille and Jakwob. Only in 2015 did he issue his initial solo release, “Fast Lane.” Step by step he disclosed his presence through music videos that foregrounded a soulful, boundary-crossing aesthetic. U.K. radio endorsement soon translated into live appearances and a Warner Bros. recording agreement. Also in 2015 he delivered the four-song EP Fuel to the Fire, which contained the slow jam “Re.Up” featuring Zena Kitt on vocals. The Vessels EP, anchored by its own laid-back hit single, arrived in February 2017; his self-titled full-length debut followed in October. After lending his voice to Black Saint’s “Ante Up” single in early 2018, Rationale issued his own track “One by One” that September.
