Lewis Del Mar operates as an electro-acoustic indie pop duo rather than a solo act, consisting of Washington, D.C. transplants Danny Miller on vocals and guitar and Max Harwood on drums and production while based in New York. Viral traction from the 2015 single "Loud(y)" secured them a major-label contract, after which their self-titled 2016 debut album posted substantial streaming figures. Several years of intensive touring preceded completion of their sophomore full-length, August, which surfaced in 2020.

Miller and Harwood, who had intermittently collaborated since grade school, launched Lewis Del Mar in 2013 following their move to Rockaway Beach. They selected the project name to reference their fathers, both called Lewis, together with the coastal area they called home. Their melodic, percussion-driven sound, built around samples and altered audio textures, propelled the debut single "Loud(y)" onto multiple streaming charts in 2015. Sony Music issued the four-track EP early the next year. By mid-2016 "Loud(y)" had reached the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart, while the EP cut "Malt Liquor" returned them to streaming rankings. The full-length Lewis Del Mar arrived in October 2016, peaking at number 19 on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart on the strength of tracks such as "Wave(s)" and "Painting (Masterpiece)." The ensuing two years found the duo performing internationally and appearing at major U.S. festivals including Austin City Limits and Lollapalooza.

After signing with the Fader Label, Lewis Del Mar released "The Ceiling" in May 2020 as the primary lead single for their second album, August.
