The American power metal trio Ashes of Ares delivers intense, tuneful, and forward-thinking music shaped by the distinct backgrounds and inspirations of its members.
Ex-Nevermore drummer Van Williams, commanding ex-Iced Earth vocalist Matt Barlow, and bassist Freddie Vidales, also formerly of Iced Earth, launched the group in 2012. Their self-titled debut album appeared on Nuclear Blast in September 2013 and was followed by an extended European tour. Williams, a founding member and the band's drummer, exited in 2017 to join Ghost Ship Octavius, yet supplied his forceful drumming for the 2018 follow-up Well of Souls. After festival slots and touring dates across North America and Europe, the band stepped back during the pandemic and resurfaced with Emperors and Fools in 2022.
