Biography
Rising to prominence via the Disney Channel as a vocalist, performer, and thespian, Ross Lynch later established the polished pop/rock unit the Driver Era with his brother. He first surfaced publicly in 2010 as part of the sibling ensemble R5, then expanded his reach through lead roles in the Disney Channel series Austin & Ally and the film Teen Beach Movie. After R5 disbanded, Lynch and Rocky Lynch launched the Driver Era, which issued X in 2019, Girlfriend in 2021, and Summer Mixtape in 2022. Parallel to those efforts, he received praise for portraying serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in My Friend Dahmer and for his turn as Harvey Kinkle in Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. In 2023 the Driver Era previewed a fourth album via the single “Rumors.”
Born in Littleton, Colorado, in 1995, Lynch received home schooling and mastered piano, drums, and guitar. When he turned 12 the family relocated to Los Angeles to advance eldest brother Riker’s entertainment prospects. In 2009 Lynch joined the Kidz Bop Kids and contributed vocals to Kidz Bop, Vol. 15, covering tracks such as Katy Perry’s “Hot N Cold.” He performed with Riker, Rocky, Ryland, sister Rydel, and friend Ellington Ratliff in the band R5, which released the Ready, Set, Rock EP in 2010 and appeared on School Gyrls’ self-titled album the same year. Lynch also danced with the troupe Rage Boyz Crew and featured on So You Think You Can Dance.
Early in 2011 he landed the role of Austin on Austin & Ally, the story of a teenager propelled to stardom after a singing video circulates online. Multiple clips and the single “Heard It on the Radio” followed the December 2011 debut, prompting renewal for a second season in March 2012. The Austin & Ally soundtrack appeared that September, while Lynch juggled the 2013 Disney Channel film Teen Beach Movie and R5’s album Louder.
Two years afterward he added still more releases: Teen Beach 2 and its soundtrack, R5’s Sometime Last Night, and Austin & Ally: Take It from the Top all surfaced in 2015.
As Lynch grew older he embraced more layered characters, among them serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in the 2017 biopic My Friend Dahmer. He further portrayed Harvey Kinkle opposite Kiernan Shipka in the Netflix series The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, drawn from Archie Comics. While finishing what became R5’s final project, the New Addictions EP, Ross and Rocky Lynch pivoted to form the duo the Driver Era. They debuted in March 2018 with “Preacher Man,” which reached the Top 40 of the Billboard alternative songs chart and appeared on their BMG debut album X, released in June 2019.
The Driver Era kept issuing singles at a regular pace and sustained visibility on playlists and streaming rankings before unveiling their second album, Girlfriend, in October 2021. As the Girlfriend tour extended into 2022, the brothers exited BMG and delivered their next album, Summer Mixtape, on their own TOO Records in September 2022; it featured a duet with soul singer Nikka Costa. An international tour encompassing Asia, Australia, and Europe ensued. The standalone track “Rumors” followed in December 2023.
