The moniker Bass Mekanik belongs to producer Neil Case, recognized as a leading figure in the realm of bass music. His career began when he worked as a DJ in Jamaica, his country of origin, where the deep low-end tones on the records he played quickly captured his attention. He later took a position as assistant engineer at Kingston’s Dynamic Sound Studios, collaborating there with reggae icons Jimmy Cliff and Peter Tosh while mastering the technical side of studio work. After spending years operating the equipment at Dynamic, Case relocated to Miami and began issuing homemade bass mixes built entirely from his own productions. He operated for the initial two years under the name Beat Dominator before adopting the Bass Mekanik alias in 1994. Through numerous albums, compilations, singles, and joint projects released under that name, he rose to become one of the most prominent artists in bass music, with titles such as Audio Toolbox and Best of Food for Woofers turning into fixtures of the car-stereo competition circuit. Virtually no promotional efforts supported these releases; instead, the extreme sub-bass frequencies themselves drew enthusiasts focused on powerful car audio systems. Fan-to-fan recommendations served as his primary means of exposure, and Case responded by discussing directly with listeners the ways his tracks could enhance their setups. His central role in the scene eventually prompted a line of car-audio components to be branded with his name, prompting him to expand into the commercial side of his work by founding his own label along with the website www.BassMekanik.com in 2001.
