Nathaniel Orange, performing as C.C. Lemonhead, and Johnny McGowan, known professionally as Jay Ski, first connected as high-school friends in Jacksonville, Florida. Attracted to Miami bass’s signature low-end frequencies, the pair started producing tracks and initially partnered with Icy J and Three Grand. Their pivotal creation, the enduring bass anthem “Whoot (There It Is),” appeared under the 95 South moniker and earned triple-platinum certification in 1993. That breakthrough led to further assignments, among them Dis-n-Dat’s “Freak Me Baby” and the double-platinum single “Tootsee Roll” by 69 Boyz. Serving as producers of “Tootsee Roll” and the accompanying 69 Boyz album 199Quad, they received Billboard’s Best Rap Single honor for 1994 and were ranked among that year’s top ten producers. In 1995 the pair assembled Quad City DJ’s and delivered another platinum-certified hit, “C’Mon N’ Ride It (The Train).” Their ensuing album, Get on Up and Dance, entered the Top 40 and attained gold status.
