DJ Laz, born Lazaro Mendez, rose to prominence in Latin bass music after launching his career at age 15 with performances that involved spinning, mixing, and scratching records in South Florida clubs. Those early gigs secured radio slots at WHQT FM and WPOW 96.5 FM, where he remains among the outlet’s most recognized on-air talents. A contract with the established bass label Pandisc yielded his first album, DJ Laz Featuring Mami El Negro, in 1991; its title track “Mami El Negro” entered the Top 100. Further Pandisc releases followed, including Journey Into Bass in 1993, King of Bass in 1996, Cruzin’ in 1998, and Pimpin’ in 2000, each showcasing contributions from rappers such as Trick Dog, Celo, Hallucination, and Daddy C. In addition to his recording and broadcasting work, Laz promotes concerts and appears live at Ft. Lauderdale nightspots including Zippers and Roxy, and he has supplied remixes for Luther Campbell, 2 Live Crew, Will Smith, and Gloria Estefan.
