Biography
De la Ghetto stands out as a high-output urbano performer whose command spans reggaeton, Latin trap, pop, and hip-pop; born in the United States and raised in Puerto Rico, he first gained traction through his former duo partnership with Arcángel via the major reggaeton success “Ven Pégate” in 2005. Recognized for bilingual rhymes delivered through a percussive, rapid-fire cadence, he pursued an independent path after the pair separated in 2007. Although full-length projects such as the 2008 release Masacre Musical and the 2018 set Mi Movimiento registered on the charts, his primary activity has centered on the steady stream of singles, mixtape appearances, and guest spots that established him as a constant presence on Latin radio, video outlets, and streaming platforms. In featured roles he contributed to notable tracks including Yaga & Mackie’s “Aparentemente” alongside Arcángel, Nicky Jam’s “Si Tú No Estás,” and the Sofia Reyes and Jason Derulo collaboration “1,2,3.” His momentum extended into the 2020s, with singles accumulating millions of streams and the arrival in 2023 of his debut independent album, GZ.
Born Rafael Castillo on September 17, 1982, in New York City, he relocated with his family to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where he entered the city’s expanding reggaeton community. In 2004 he formed the duo Arcángel y De la Ghetto with fellow New York City-born Puerto Rican artist Arcángel, whose given name is Austin Santos. Their breakthrough arrived with “Ven Pégate,” included on the widely circulated Hector El Father-hosted mixtape album Sangre Nueva in 2005. Across 2005 and 2006 the duo appeared on multiple reggaeton projects, among them Luny Tunes’ Mas Flow: Los Benjamins in 2006, and maintained ties to Baby Records, the imprint associated with Zion of the duo Zion & Lennox.
Arcángel declared in December 2006 his intention to launch a solo career and establish his own label. Following that announcement, De la Ghetto initiated his own solo trajectory and soon appeared on one of his most prominent successes to that point, the Tito El Bambino and Randy remix of “Siente el Boom” from the 2007 album Top of the Line: El Internacional. Later the same year he achieved his second major hit with “Sensación del Bloque,” another collaboration with Randy.
After those commercial breakthroughs, De la Ghetto issued his major-label full-length debut Masacre Musical in 2008; the project reached number 46 on the Top Latin Albums chart, while its single “Dificil” climbed to number 42 on the Hot Latin Songs chart. Although five years passed before another full-length arrived, his activity remained intense. During 2009 alone he put out five singles drawn from Musical Massacre, among them the Top 40 Hot Latin Songs entry “Tu Te Imaginas.” De la Ghetto, his label, and management sustained visibility by supplying material for numerous compilations and additional standalone releases.
In 2013 he delivered the full-length Geezy Boys: The Album, which produced five charting singles such as “Saciar la Sed,” “Ahí Ahí Ahí,” and “Sincero Amor,” the latter featuring a remix with Arcángel. De la Ghetto and his team began releasing videos that maintained regular placement for his tracks and collaborations on social media and streaming rankings. Between 2016 and 2018 he secured no fewer than nine entries on the Hot Latin Songs chart plus six additional placements on lists including Latin Airplay and Tropical Songs, while expanding his guest appearances at an exponential rate; by 2016 he had become one of the most sought-after studio voices in reggaeton.
His third album, Mi Movimiento, appeared via Warner Music in September 2018. Comprising 17 tracks, many chosen through fan input on his social media accounts, the project featured collaborations with an extensive roster that included fellow chart regulars Wisin, Ozuna, Daddy Yankee, Maluma, and Fetty Wap. In July 2020 he joined Arcángel on Anitta’s track “Tócame.” Three months later he returned with his fourth studio album, Los Chulitos, which included guest appearances by Nicky Jam, Manuel Turizo, Justin Quiles, Jowell & Randy, and Farruko. A characteristically prolific stretch followed over the ensuing two years, highlighted by “Cuando Bebe,” a multi-artist super-collaboration involving Myke Towers, Mambo Kingz, and Jay Menez among others. The 2022 release “Loco Por Pearrearte (Remix)” with Rauw Alejandro also registered as a major success, sustaining anticipation for his next full-length and first independent project, GZ, in 2023.
