Biography
J Alvarez emerged from Puerto Rico as a commercially dominant and prize-winning vocalist, composer, and studio craftsman in reggaeton and urban Latin music. He first built visibility by curating and rapping on mixtapes that introduced fresh urban Latin acts. A Latin Grammy nomination arrived for the 2016 hit album Big Yauran, while multiple Premio Nuestro Awards have also come his way. He ranks among the originators of the Latin Trap movement and belongs to the earliest wave of Latin performers who harnessed social-media platforms for marketing and direct sales; his Twitter following exceeds 62 million.
Born Javid David Álvarez Fernández in Puerto Rico to Dominican parents, Alvarez displayed an all-consuming interest in music as soon as he began speaking. He mastered several instruments and initially gravitated toward American hip-hop, citing A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes, and fellow Puerto Rican Tego Calderon. At twelve he performed an original composition before classmates and instructors, marking his first public appearance. A cousin later introduced him to reggaeton pioneer DJ Nelson, who signed him to FlowMusic in 2009 and issued the debut album El Dueño del Sistema. That project featured guest spots from De La Ghetto, Ñejo and Dalmata, Nova and Jory, Ñengo Flow, Jowell and Randy, and additional reggaeton figures.
The 2010 mixtape El Movimiento: The Mixtape followed, mixing solo cuts with appearances by Yaga & Mackie and Arcangel; its club staples included “Junto al Amanecer” and “Regalame una Noche.” September 2011 brought Otro Nivel de Musica, which yielded his first charting single, “La Pregunta,” while the clip for “Sexo, Sudor y Calor” accumulated millions of YouTube views. FlowMusic expanded the set in May 2012 as Otro Nivel de Musica Reloaded, adding Jory, Zion & Lennox, and Farruko; every single reached Latin Streaming Songs and Latin Digital Song Sales. The album earned a 2012 Latin Grammy nomination for Best Urban Music Album, and in 2013 Alvarez collected three Premio Nuestra nominations for Urban Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year.
Extensive touring across the Caribbean, the United States, and Latin America produced consistent sell-outs. The 2014 album De Camino Pa ’La Cima, containing turns from Daddy Yankee and Zion and Mackie, opened at number two on Top Latin Albums, number thirteen on Top Rap Albums, and inside the Billboard 200. Four of its singles registered on Tropical Airplay, Latin Airplay, and Top Latin Singles. Billboard Award nominations for Latin Artist of the Year and Artist of the Year, Soloist arrived that year, alongside a Premios Tu Mundo nod for Favorite Urban Artist. A further Latin Grammy nomination recognized his contribution to Alkilados’ “Una Cita Remix” alongside El Roockie and Nicky Jam.
Between 2009 and 2015, Alvarez kept issuing mixtapes that circulated rapidly via social networks and his fan club; the final installment, Le Canta al Amor, became a worldwide club success. The 2016 studio album Big Yauran, boasting appearances by Lapiz Conscious, Oneill, Carlitos Rossy, Lito, Pole, and others plus the charting track “Haters,” placed on Latin Albums charts around the world. He also issued the concert recording Desde Puerto Rico Live. The 2017 retrospective The Latest Hits compiled seventeen singles and remixes whose videos surpassed 200 million views. Early 2018 saw the arrival of J Alvarez Remixes, followed by the studio set La Fama Que Camina, which debuted at number twenty-six on Top Latin Albums behind the single “Rico Suave.”
