Jamaican producer and vocalist Rvssian creates music built for heavy club rotation, frequently merging reggaeton, dancehall, and R&B. Early recognition arrived through his close partnership with dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel, beginning with the 2010 track “Life Sweet” and expanding into a run of hits that placed his beats on recordings by Shaggy, Sean Paul, Bad Bunny, and other leading figures in dancehall, reggaeton, Latin rap, trap, and overlapping styles. As founder of Head Concussion Records he issued multiple Kartel singles while developing fresh talent including J Capri, Demarco, and Blak Ryno. His production résumé later grew to encompass Juice WRLD, Cardi B, and Carlos Santana, and he maintained a steady schedule of his own releases such as the 2021 hit “Nostalgico” and 2024’s “Santa.”

Born Tarik Johnston in Kingston, Jamaica, he studied piano and drums while amassing cassettes of dancehall and hip-hop. Production became his focus after high school; he postponed college, vowing to resume studies only if music had not succeeded after a full year of effort. Momentum arrived quickly when his 2008 debut riddim “Liberty Riddim” drew moderate attention, yet it was the 2010 Kartel collaboration “Life Sweet” that turned into a major success and opened every subsequent door. Until that breakthrough he recorded under “RUSSIAN,” then altered the spelling to “Rvssian” for easier online discovery. He sustained a run of Kartel singles, pausing only partially after the artist’s 2011 arrest and 2014 life sentence for the murder of Clive Williams in what was then Jamaica’s longest trial. Rvssian continued issuing new Kartel material both during the sentencing wait and afterward, among them 2013’s “Hi” and 2017’s “Kremlin.” He also moved to the Miami area, absorbing the city’s bass-driven sound into productions for Head Concussion artists J Capri and Konshens. Annual releases kept coming, highlighted by the 2018 J Balvin and Farruko collaboration “Ponle” and his appearance on Becky G’s 2019 hit “Next To You.” That same year he produced a track for Juice WRLD’s third album Death Race for Love and the French Montana single “Writing on the Wall,” which featured Post Malone and Cardi B. Before 2019 ended he joined Tyga, YG, and Carlos Santana on “Mamacita.” Subsequent years brought further production and guest spots alongside Lil Tjay, Anuel AA, Shenseea, and others. In 2021 he linked with Chris Brown and Rauw Alejandro for “Nostalgico,” which surpassed 100 million streams within months, then reunited with Future and Lil Baby on “M&M.” Additional singles followed, including the 2022 Sfera Ebbasta tracks “Italiano Anthem” and “Mamma Mia,” 2023’s “Sixteen” with Vybz Kartel and Trippie Redd, and the 2024 blockbuster “Santa,” which rapidly accumulated hundreds of millions of streams.
