Biography
Known fully as Juan Luis Morera Luna, Wisin has built an extensive career as a rapper, vocalist, composer, and studio architect. Alongside his own projects, he makes up half of the worldwide reggaeton pair Wisin & Yandel and has joined more than one hundred acts across reggaeton, trap, and Latin pop, among them Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull, Enrique Iglesias, and Sebastian Yatra. Although the duo delivered three gold records from 2000 to 2004—the final year also bringing Wisin’s debut solo set El Sobreviviente—their commercial ascent truly arrived with 2005’s Pa’l Mundo. Wisin continued appearing on outside tracks, yet he and Yandel stayed together nine additional years, producing successful albums and songs such as 2010’s La Revolución and 2012’s Líderes before pausing. His second solo album, the chart-leading El Regreso del Sobreviviente, surfaced in 2014. Los Vaqueros: La Trilogia arrived the following year, earned platinum certification, and led multiple rankings; Victory followed in 2017 and likewise achieved platinum status. Wisin & Yandel reconvened for 2019’s Los Campeones del Pueblo: The Big Leagues, enlisting producers that included Tainy and DJ Luian. Wisin’s fifth solo album, Los Legendarios 001, emerged in 2021, succeeded a year later by Multimillo, Vol. 1 along with the singles “Tiempo” and the Anuel AA collaboration “MI EXXX.”
Born Juan Luis Morera Luna on December 19, 1978, in Cayey, Puerto Rico, he and Yandel started performing together in the late 1990s and issued their first album, Los Reyes del Nuevo Milenio, in 2000. They moved to a major label in 2003 with Mi Vida... My Life, their initial release on Universal subsidiary Machete Music. Even while the pair maintained chart presence and live dates in 2004, Wisin put out his debut solo project El Sobreviviente. Crafted with Monserrate & DJ Urba along with DJ Sonic and Fido, the set included “Saoco” (feat. Daddy Yankee) and “El Jinete” (feat. Alexis & Fido) and reached the Top 20 on both the U.S. and Top Latin Albums charts.
Wisin & Yandel achieved mainstream recognition via 2005’s Pa’l Mundo, which received RIAA gold certification and appeared on charts in Japan and China. The duo subsequently founded their own imprint, WY Records, and introduced the affiliated act Los Vaqueros.
Their sequence of successful albums and singles persisted, with 2007 proving especially decisive. They released the studio album Los Extraterrestres, a live recording, and various singles collections, mounted a world tour, and contributed to the compilation Caribbean Connection alongside Daddy Yankee, Inner Circle, Elephant Man, and Don Omar. The pair received a Billboard Latin Music Award for Latin Rhythm Album of the Year, Duo or Group.
In 2009 the chart-topping live album La Revolución appeared, featuring 50 Cent on the single “Mujeres in the Club.” Wisin rejoined the duo for 2011’s Los Vaqueros: El Regreso, which also welcomed T-Pain, Sean Kingston, and further label artists; the project entered the Latin Top Ten, later claiming the number-one Latin Albums spot—their fifth to do so. Their most collaborative effort to date, 2012’s Líderes, brought guest appearances from Chris Brown, T-Pain, Jennifer Lopez on the lead single “Follow the Leader,” and Daddy Yankee on the third single “Hipnotizame,” again reaching the summit of the Latin albums chart.
Speculation of an impending split circulated in 2013 and gained traction when Yandel issued De Líder a Leyenda. Wisin countered with the solo single “Que Viva la Vida,” which preceded El Regreso del Sobreviviente; the album climbed to number three on the Latin albums chart. The duo later dismissed separation rumors, stating they were recording new material together by late 2014, even as Wisin maintained an active solo schedule. That year also saw the collaborative single “Adrenalina” with Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin, plus his own “Control” featuring Chris Brown and Pitbull.
The 2015 single “Nota de Amor,” uniting Daddy Yankee and Carlos Vives, introduced the autumn release Los Vaqueros: La Trilogía, whose guest roster comprised Prince Royce, Farruko, Plan B, J Alvarez, Tito El Bambino, and Arcángel. Wisin returned in 2017 with “Escápate Conmigo” featuring Ozuna; the track rose to number three on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart and anchored the later album Victory.
Wisin & Yandel formally announced their reunion in February 2018 and performed at Madison Square Garden in June during New York City’s Puerto Rican Day Parade weekend while continuing studio work. October brought the pre-release single “Reggaetón en lo Oscuro” ahead of their tenth studio album, Los Campeones del Pueblo (The Big Leagues), issued in December with fourteen tracks containing seven collaborations: “Dame Algo” (feat. Bad Bunny), “Deseo” (feat. Zion & Lennox), “Aullando” (feat. Romeo Santos), and “Collao” (feat. Ozuna) among them. The set reached number two on Top Latin Albums, after which the duo toured.
Solo pursuits continued unabated. Wisin accumulated numerous guest spots and issued his own singles regularly. Two of the five solo releases he put out in 2018—“Quisiera Alejarme” (feat. Ozuna & CNCO) and “Si Me Das Tu Amor” (feat. Carlos Vives)—topped the Latin Songs chart. He delivered seven singles in 2019, with “Boogaloo Supreme” (feat. Victor Manuelle) peaking at number five on the Tropical Songs chart.
Despite the worldwide pandemic, Wisin released twelve singles under his own name in 2020 while maintaining abundant guest appearances. “Gistro Amarillo” (feat. Ozuna) and “Enemigos Ocultos” (feat. Arcángel, Juanka, and Cosculluela) performed strongly inside the streaming Top 20 and amassed hundreds of millions of YouTube views. In June he launched his own imprint, La Base Music, motivated by his prior roles as a coach on the reality programs La Voz and La Banda. Early October saw “Mi Niña” (feat. Myke Towers & Los Legendarios) gain streaming traction, while Victory re-entered the Top Latin Albums chart in late September. February 2021 brought Los Legendarios 001, Wisin’s fifth solo album, which reached number eight on the U.S. Latin Albums chart. Subsequent singles included the 2022 streaming successes “Buenos Días” and “3G,” both featured on Multimillo, Vol. 1 released that July. Among his numerous 2023 collaborations were “MI EXXX” with Anuel AA and “Sandunga” alongside Don Omar and Yandel.
