Hailing from Puerto Rico, Cosculluela works as a rapper and singer whose output merges Latin, trap, hip-hop, and reggaeton elements into a distinctive sound. His breakthrough arrived via the 2009 debut El Principe, which reached the top of the Billboard Latin Urban chart and included the hit single "Solo a Solas" featuring Maluma. He has also joined forces on tracks with Daddy Yankee, Nicky Jam, Farruko, Wisin & Yandel, and additional artists, while albums such as 2011's El Niño and 2016's Blanco Perla further expanded his catalog. In 2018 he linked with Bad Bunny on the hit song "Madura," and after concentrating on standalone releases he delivered the 2023 follow-up El Principe 2.

José Cosculluela entered the world in Humacao, Puerto Rico, and began creating music during his teenage years by recording mixtapes alongside his brother and friends. Producer Buddha later discovered him and placed the artist on the Invasion label. Cosculluela issued his first commercial recordings in 2005, contributing "Te Va a Ir Mal" to the various-artists set Buddha's Family, Vol. 2: Desde la Prision and "Vamos a Darle" to Don Omar's Los Bandoleros compilation. His visibility rose sharply in the years that followed, highlighted by featured appearances on the hit remix of "Somos de Calle" from Daddy Yankee's Talento de Barrio (2008) and on "Entre el Bien y el Mal" from Hector el Father's El Juicio Final (2008).

The solo album debut El Principe surfaced in 2009 through Universal Music Latino; the eagerly awaited project contained guest turns from Ivy Queen, De la Ghetto, Jowell & Randy, and Zion & Lennox. It climbed to number three on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart and yielded the hit singles "Na Na Nau" and "Prrrum," whose respective remixes featured Jowell & Randy and Wisin & Yandel. Critics praised the record as one of the strongest reggaeton albums of the year for its range of styles and lyrical depth, and a reissue with five bonus tracks appeared the following year. The more laid-back El Niño arrived in 2011, after which War Kingz surfaced in 2012 and reached the Top Ten on Billboard's Latin Rhythm charts. Santa Cos followed in 2014, debuting on the chart while its singles "Pa la Pared" (featuring Jowell y Randy) and the title track maintained longer runs.

During 2015 Cosculluela joined Randy Nota Loka on Ñejo's "A Veces" and appeared on the O.G. Black vs. Watussi "La Fantasma" remix; he also issued The Ones in September, a collection of hits, remixes, and new material that included "Pa Wall" (featuring Jowell y Randy), "Parkiao" (featuring the Mafia Boyz), and a remix of "Prrrum" (featuring Wisin & Yandel). His January 2016 single "Te Busco" with Nicky Jam rose to number nine on the Hot Latin Songs chart, prompting a move to WEA—his initial major-label agreement—while he retained the independent Rottweilas Inc. imprint. Blanco Perla arrived that March, followed by the second single "A Donde Voy" featuring Daddy Yankee, which peaked at number three on the Latin Airplay charts. After the birth of his first child, Cosculluela stepped away from music until resurfacing in 2019 with the tracks "Dime a Ver" and "Guatauba."

The mariachi-inspired "Un AK" emerged in 2020, after which he devoted himself to singles and collaborations such as 2022's "Chambean" with Tego Calderón and "Me Llamas" with Genio, Chencho Corleone, and Darrell. Late in 2023, following the Los Muertos compilation, Cosculluela released the sequel album El Principe 2. Largely self-produced at his rural studio in the Puerto Rican countryside, the twenty-song project included guest contributions from Nicky Jam, Zion, and Ozuna.
