Biography
Grammy-winning Luny Tunes formed reggaeton’s earliest powerhouse production duo, generating a steady stream of hit singles, dance-floor staples, and mixtape releases while linking up with the genre’s leading vocalists. The pair consists of Francisco Saldaña, known as Luny and born June 23, 1979, alongside Víctor Cabrera, known as Tunes and born April 12, 1981. They first connected while employed in a Harvard University dining hall and soon chose to collaborate as producers, recording artists, and performers. Their initial major opportunity arrived when reggaeton trailblazer DJ Nelson discovered their work on Hector & Tito’s A La Reconquista (2002), signed them to Flow Music, and opened industry doors.
The duo’s major-label introduction came with Noriega on the 2003 mixtape Mas Flow, which spotlighted an array of the era’s top vocalists—Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, Tego Calderón, Wisin & Yandel, Hector & Tito, Zion & Lennox, Baby Ranks, Nicky Jam, Trebol Clan, and others—solidifying their status as an essential production team. Their production on Daddy Yankee’s Barrio Fino earned the Latin Grammy for Best Urban Album of the Year in 2005, while 2006’s Los Benjamins, a joint project with Tainy, reached number 30 on the Billboard 200. Across the following decade they placed material spanning reggaeton, cumbia, reggae, and hard rap on more than a dozen Billboard charts, including Top Latin Albums, Reggae Albums, Tropical Albums, and various digital tallies. Additional production and remix credits during this period extended to Janet Jackson, Tego Calderón, R. Kelly, Ivy Queen, and numerous others. Their 2016 single “Mayor Que Yo 3,” featuring Daddy Yankee, Wisin, Don Omar, and Yandel, reached the Top 20 on Hot Latin Songs.
The duo’s reputation for global hits took hold with “Gasolina,” one of several contributions to Daddy Yankee’s Barrio Fino that achieved worldwide success in 2004. Within a tight two-year window they also supplied productions for Don Omar’s The Last Don (2003), Tego Calderón’s El Abayarde (2003), Eddie Dee’s 12 Discipulos (2004), Ivy Queen’s Diva (2004), Zion & Lennox’s Motivando a la Yal (2004), Nicky Jam’s Vida Escante (2004), and Trebol Clan’s Los Bacatranes (2004). Mas Flow 2 arrived in 2005, followed in 2006 by Los Benjamins and the compilation Reggaeton Hits, itself preceded by the 2004 best-of collection La Trayectoria. The 2007 release Los Benjamins: La Continuacion came shortly after the second installment of their Kings of the Beats instrumental series.
By this stage Luny Tunes operated Mas Flow Inc. as a production factory that employed assistant producers including Tainy, Jose M. Gomez, Nely, Los Presidents, Mr. G, Nesty La Mente Maestra, Nely El Arma Secreta, Tainy Tunes, Anuel AA, and Nales. In 2007 they delivered a remix of Janet Jackson’s “Call on Me” featuring Nelly and oversaw the worldwide chart-topping single “Noche de Entierro (Nuestro Amor)” performed by Daddy Yankee, Tonny Tun Tun, Hector “El Father,” Zion, and Wisin & Yandel—one of reggaeton’s most widely recognized anthems. That same year they crafted remixes for Paris Hilton’s “Stars Are Blind” featuring Wisin y Yandel and Alejandro Sanz’s “Te Lo Agradezco, Pero No” featuring Shakira.
In 2008 the duo signed Erre XI to Mas Flow; the resulting Luny Tunes Presents: Erre XI yielded the charting single “Carita Bonita” featuring Pee Wee of Kumbia All Starz. The following year they added Dyland & Lenny to the roster, issued the club hit “Nadie Te Amará Como Yo,” and contributed to Ana Bárbara’s “Rompiendo Cadenas.” Their production of Dyland & Lenny’s 2010 debut My World generated the charting singles “Nadie Te Amará Como Yo,” “Quiere Pa’ Que Te Quieran,” and “Caliente.” They also guided Ivy Queen’s seventh studio album Drama Queen, which spawned “La Vida Es Así,” “Cosas de la Vida,” and “Aya Aya,” and later produced her eighth studio album Musa in 2012. Additional 2012 work included tracks for Farruko’s The Most Powerful Rookie and Daddy Yankee’s Prestige, among at least a dozen other projects.
From 2014 onward the Puerto Rico-based pair focused on outside productions such as Wisin’s “Adrenalina” featuring Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias’ “Duele el Corazon,” Yandel’s “Moviendo Caderas” featuring Daddy Yankee, Daddy Yankee’s “Limbo,” and material for Farruko, Tito el Bambino, and others. In 2018 they produced Enrique Iglesias’ “El Bano” featuring Bad Bunny, and in 2019 they released Mas Flow 3: Back to the Underground.
