Among the enigmatic personalities of post-war blues stands Big Mac, a truck driver from Arkansas whose background stayed otherwise unknown. He participated in what appears to be his sole documented session, cutting "Rough Dried Woman" with Hubert Sumlin for Stan Lewis' Jewel label in the mid-'60s. Co-written by Chicago producer Don Clay, the number had originally been slated as an instrumental spotlighting drummer Willie Williams, yet Big Mac's somewhat limited vocal range nearly recast it as a lesser Howlin' Wolf-style performance, Sumlin taking the lead during the second half on the B-side. After the session Mac disappeared and was never encountered again, at least so far as records indicate.
