The instrumental British quartet Billy Mahonie came into being through an initial 1994 partnership involving guitarist Gavin Baker and drummer Howard Monk. That early endeavor ended quickly, leading the pair to pursue separate musical paths in various other groups during the subsequent couple of years. Drawing motivation from the rising Chicago post-rock scene, Baker and Monk joined forces once more in 1997. Following the creation of multiple four-track demos, they added bassists Hywell Dinsdale and Kevin Penney to the lineup, with their inaugural performance taking place in December backing Rothko. Prior to the issuance of "Whistling Sam" toward the close of 1998, a split single shared with Rothko came out. Billy Mahonie then inked a deal with Too Pure in the beginning of 1999, resulting in the summer appearance of their first full-length album, The Big Dig. Before the year concluded, two additional releases emerged: Come On Billy Mahonie Give It Your Best Shot, consisting of three CD singles distributed during concerts, and the EP One Thousand Years of Billy Mahonie, which marked Too Pure's 100th celebratory issuance.
