Biography
Black Atlass crafts an alternative R&B style steeped in shadow and simmering tension. The singer, songwriter, and producer, best recognized for the duet “Sacrifice” alongside Jessie Reyez, has issued several EPs and albums spanning Young Bloods (2014) through Dream Awake (2020).
Alex Fleming, a native of Montreal, launched his Black Atlass project on the Fool’s Gold imprint in 2013 via the single “Paris,” which showcased his versatility through an acoustic piano rendition paired with the densely processed electronic original. The six-track EP Young Bloods arrived the following year. In 2015 he guested on Action Bronson’s Top Ten release Mr. Wonderful, then delivered his debut full-length Haunted Paradise in 2016. Fleming joined the Weeknd’s Republic-backed XO roster in 2018. That same year he contributed the track “Sacrifice,” a collaboration with Jessie Reyez, to the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack—where it rapidly amassed tens of millions of streams—and released the Pain & Pleasure EP. Further sonic refinements surfaced on the 2020 album Dream Awake.
