Nashville, Tennessee, provided the starting point for Bonnie Keen’s path when she launched into studio session work as a vocalist. Among the performers she supported in that capacity were Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Rich Mullins, Steve Winwood, and Barry Manilow. Those same years of behind-the-scenes recording gave rise to the vocal trio First Call, whose original members included Keen alongside Marty McCall and Mel Tunney; Marabeth Jordan eventually took Tunney’s place. Together the group issued twelve albums, earned five Grammy nominations and eleven Dove Award nominations, and secured three Dove Awards. When Jordan departed in 1994, the ensemble continued as a duo.

Keen’s private circumstances at the time included divorce, an extended struggle with depression, and the demands of raising a child alone. She has stated that God imparted important lessons to her amid that suffering. Her debut solo project, Marked for Life, appeared in 1999. Four years earlier, her first book, Blessed Are the Desperate for They Will Find Peace: Hope in the Midst of Broken Dreams, reached print in 2000.
