Steve Green launched his career in gospel music in the mid-1970s, performing backup vocals and bass lines alongside Sandi Patti, White Heart, and the Gaither Vocal Band. A solo agreement with Sparrow Records followed in the early 1980s, leading directly to the release of his self-titled debut album in 1984. Grammy nominations and Dove Awards accumulated as he maintained a pace of more than one album annually through the 2010s, incorporating Spanish-language projects such as 1987's Tienen Que Saber along with holiday collections like 1987's Joy to the World! and 1996's First Noel into his standard output. Beyond solo recordings, Green devoted attention to videos and James Dobson's Focus on the Family within the scope of his musical ministry.

He remained on Sparrow until 2010, after which he began issuing material through his independent Steve Green Ministries imprint. Five solo projects emerged in that decade, joined by an eighth Spanish-language collection, 2019's El Descanso, and further installments in the children's series Hide the Word: Bible Memory Melodies. His induction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame occurred in 2017.
