Carla Cappa channels her atmospheric pop sensibilities through the project CAPPA, whose breezy aesthetic brings to mind Ellie Goulding, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Halsey. Her mother, a fellow singer/songwriter, named her after Carly Simon. Raised outside Philadelphia, Cappa absorbed the music of Hall & Oates and Britney Spears from an early age. She began composing original material and learning guitar in grade school, then won the 2009 USA Songwriting Competition while still in high school for the song “I’m Not.” That same year she cut her debut album, You Never Got Me, as a school assignment. A USA Songwriting Competition showcase ignited her affection for Nashville, leading her to relocate there at nineteen to develop her skills. Internships and songwriting sessions gradually steered her sound away from the Avril Lavigne-esque “I’m Not” toward EDM-leaning tracks such as 2013’s “My Heart Is Beating Again.” CAPPA debuted in 2015 with “Hush,” which invited comparisons to Purity Ring and Grimes. She issued a self-titled EP recorded with producer Jon Santana that April and ended the year with a cover of TLC’s “No Scrubs.” The 2016 Queen of Hearts EP paired her with Halsey producer Dylan Bauld in Los Angeles and with her regular Nashville collaborators. Late in 2017 she resurfaced with the breathy single “Waste My Time.”
