A spontaneous piano recital in the lobby of Auckland's Regents Hotel during 1987 brought Carl Doy to the notice of Murray Thom, then managing director of New Zealand's CBS office, resulting in an immediate recording agreement. His debut release, Piano By Candlelight, achieved extraordinary commercial results by moving more than fifty thousand units in its first twelve months. Doy sustained this momentum through his signature ultra-light treatments of popular repertoire. With the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra he produced a nine-CD instrumental survey devoted to the catalogs of Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Nat King Cole, Burt Bgacharach and Barbara Streisand. After Time Life acquired North American distribution rights, the boxed set surpassed three million copies sold inside the United States. Doy trained at London's Royal College of Music, completing his studies with honors in the mid-1980s.
