Spencer Brewer has earned acclaim as a pianist, composer, and producer whose instrumental recordings fuse classical forms with jazz and pop elements. He first surfaced in the early 1980s via multiple Narada releases, among them the 1989 album Dorian’s Legacy and the 1991 set Piper's Rhythm, each of which climbed into the Top Ten of Billboard’s New Age chart. After establishing Laughing Coyote studio, he broadened his catalog through sessions alongside Paul McCandless and Kit Walker, scored numerous film and television projects, and explored his affinity for classic film scores on the 2008 orchestral outing Cinematic; in 2023 he revisited his own earlier material on Behind the Veil.

Born in Dallas, Texas, in 1954, Brewer took up the piano at age seven under his grandmother’s guidance in blues and boogie-woogie. Classical instruction followed shortly thereafter, yet by age twelve he abandoned formal lessons to pursue improvisation and independent study. Rapid progress led him to write original pieces and perform with neighborhood rock groups. Following high school he enrolled for a year and a half at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, where he attended music-theory courses before leaving school and relocating to Austin. Daytime engagements in local bars and restaurants supplemented nighttime gigs there. During the 1970s he settled in Columbia, Missouri, collaborating with area players while serving as accompanist for modern-dance ensembles that included the companies of Deborah Hay, Martha Graham, Daniel Llanes, and Suzanne Grace.

In 1981 Brewer relocated once more, this time to Northern California, launching Willow Rose Records. By then he had shaped a singular instrumental new-age style informed by jazz figures such as Meade Lux Lewis and Oscar Peterson, rock acts including the Beatles and Cream, and the French Impressionist composers Debussy, Ravel, and Satie. Subsequent albums on the label prompted its acquisition by the independent Narada imprint, which issued Where Angels Dance in 1983, Shadow Dancer in 1984, Emerald in 1986, and Portraits in 1987. Both Dorian’s Legacy and Piper’s Rhythm later reached the Top Ten on Billboard’s New Age sales chart. Although 1993’s Romantic Interludes concluded Brewer’s run of full-length Narada projects, he continued contributing to the label’s compilations. Several joint releases with Paul McCandless appeared in 1996, among them Torches on the Lake and Summer Nights, while that same year he joined Kit Walker for Reflections on the Pond.

Brewer continues to operate Laughing Coyote studio near Ukiah, California, overseeing recordings for artists that encompass Alex de Grassi, Holly Near, Gene Parsons, and Phil Aaberg. Film and television credits include Home Alone 2, Sex and the City, and Thirtysomething, along with theme music for the YMCA and the Japanese Postal Service and contributions to multiple Olympic broadcasts. The 2008 album Cinematic presented a lush orchestral collection shaped by favored film composers, and Behind the Veil followed in 2023.
