Biography
Hailing from Norway, singer and songwriter Carl Espen Thorbjørnsen, known simply as Carl Espen, stood in for his nation at the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest staged in Copenhagen. Living in the western Norwegian town of Bergen, he joined the 2014 national selection Melodi Grand Prix with hopes of reaching that Copenhagen event and advanced to the Oslo final, where the song “Silent Storm,” written by his cousin, was chosen to represent the country. An evocative delivery at Eurovision placed him eighth with 88 points, behind Austria’s eventual victor Conchita Wurst. The track “Silent Storm” subsequently appeared on singles charts in several European territories, among them the U.K., Netherlands, Denmark, and Austria.
