Biography
Caroline Pennell entered public view in 2013 after competing on season five of NBC’s singing contest The Voice. She joined Cee Lo Green’s team and remained until her elimination late that November. Nettwerk soon signed the Saddle River, New Jersey native, issuing her first EP, The Race, on December 1, 2013; however, her profile truly expanded with a run of EDM-tinged pop singles issued in 2016 and 2017.
Born December 27, 1995, Pennell grew up immersed in music and later paused her studies at Tulane University to audition for The Voice, whose fifth season premiered in September 2013. After Green selected her, she stayed on the program through November 25. Shortly afterward she formalized her Nettwerk Music Group contract and put out The Race.
A low-key 2014 followed, during which she contributed a version of Badfinger’s “Come and Get It” to the Linda McCartney tribute EP Music for Linda; the next year her cover of Coldplay’s “Yellow” surfaced on the Nettwerk anniversary collection From Cover to Cover: 30 Years at Nettwerk. Momentum returned in 2016 with the release of “Follow the Sun,” a track that signaled her pivot toward EDM-inflected pop—an approach underscored by the later singles “Say It in Silence” and “Lovesick.” The latter spawned multiple remixes in 2017, the same year Pennell unveiled “Drive Me Home.”
