Biography
Carson McHone emerged from Texas with country music and the Lone Star State's storied singer/songwriter heritage shaping her foundation, yet she refuses to remain boxed in by those traditions. Her approach yields straightforward yet resonant melodies that complement lyrics marked by raw emotional truth when exploring love alongside other dimensions of personal connection. Onstage she allows the material itself to determine each recording's sonic direction. Her first album, the 2015 release Goodluck Man, unfolded as a straight honky-tonk affair, whereas Carousel from 2018 broadened the palette through infusions of pop, indie rock, and roots rock that introduced fresh hues. Still Life, issued in 2022 and helmed by producer Daniel Romano, deepened the textures further as her affinity for 1970s rock came to the fore.
Born in Austin in 1992, McHone absorbed the city's eclectic musical environment directly rather than relocating there as many songwriters do. She began composing and performing publicly during her mid-teens; her father, employed by a local beer distributor and proprietor of several nearby taverns, possessed intimate knowledge of Austin's club circuit and helped secure her regular bar residencies by age sixteen. Steady performances and a self-released 2013 EP helped her cultivate a devoted following within the local scene. Outlaw songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard commended her work and recruited her to sing on the track "Chick Singer, Badass Rockin'" from his 2015 album The Ruffian's Misfortune, while Austin favorites Shinyribs enlisted her vocals for their 2015 album Okra Candy. That same year she issued her debut full-length, Goodluck Man, via the Austin-based Good Horse imprint.
Favorable press for Goodluck Man expanded her touring reach, leading to regular appearances in Nashville and across the Southwest. Nine Mile Records put out her sophomore album Carousel in 2018, produced by Mike McCarthy whose credits include Spoon; the record earned critical acclaim and was licensed by Loose Records for the United Kingdom and Europe, marking her first release outside North America. Around this period she frequently shared bills with artists including Shakey Graves, Gary Clark, Jr., Charlie Mars, and Ryan Bingham. Live activity continued into 2020 with a Scandinavian tour supporting the Felice Brothers and subsequent solo dates in Spain, though most Spanish shows were ultimately canceled amid the COVID-19 pandemic's widespread venue closures.
McHone returned to Texas only briefly before relocating. Having formed a relationship with Canadian roots musician Daniel Romano, she married him in September 2020 and settled in his hometown of Toronto. With live work halted by the pandemic, she focused on new material; because Romano maintained a home studio, the couple could record safely during lockdown. McHone handled vocals and guitars, Mark Lalama contributed keyboards, David Nardi played saxophone, and Romano performed on guitar, bass, drums, and percussion while producing. The resulting Still Life was tracked entirely in their living room and appeared on Merge Records in February 2022.
