Biography
CASISDEAD functions as the frequently concealed persona of a British rapper whose stern, unflappable style holds steady whether he delivers rhymes atop boom-bap, synthwave, drum'n'bass, or vintage slow jams. Based in Tottenham, the artist first surfaced during the mid-2000s under the name Castro Saint, alternately billed as Castro or Cas, then stepped away from music for five years before resurfacing in 2012 under the CASISDEAD identity. Over the ensuing couple of years he proved highly productive, releasing numerous singles—including the grim "All Hallows'"—that later appeared on the 2013 mixtape The Number 23. His 2016 collaboration with Giggs on the single "501 (Hollow & Heston)" marked his initial entry into the U.K. Top 40. Following several more years of consistent single releases, CASISDEAD issued his first album, the unrelenting Famous Last Words, which reached the Top Ten in 2023.
Born in London’s Tottenham district, CASISDEAD recorded as Castro Saint from 2005 to 2007. After a five-year hiatus he reemerged under the new name, backed by the multimedia collective known as the Dead Team. The nightmarish CASISDEAD storylines from 2012 and 2013 were collected that same year on The Number 23, a mixtape whose varied productions included “All Hallows'” and the steely “Leon Best.” In 2015 he released the cassette-only EP Commercial 2, whose retro-futuristic synthesizer textures drew from artists such as Chromatics and Glass Candy. Subsequent singles and crossover collaborations encompassed “501 (Hollow & Heston)” (a number 38 U.K. pop hit fronted by Giggs), “Does It” (Tricky), and “Won't Admit It's Love” (Toddla T). The headlining tracks “The Grid” and “Pat Earrings” supplied further dramatic material that proved notably less grim. After a handful of additional singles, CASISDEAD unveiled his debut proper album, Famous Last Words, which blended fresh recordings with earlier material and featured guests ranging from Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant to singer/songwriter Connie Constance; the set debuted at number seven on the U.K. chart.
