Dutchavelli crashed the British mainstream in 2020 on the strength of a commanding vocal presence and razor-sharp phrasing, unleashing a string of high-impact tracks that included “I Dunno,” “Only If You Knew,” and “Burning.” Within a matter of months he had built an imposing catalog, then rounded it out with his first full-length project, the mixtape Dutch from the 5th.

Although his birthplace was Birmingham, England, Stephan Fabulous Allen—later known as Dutchavelli—grew up in Rotterdam alongside seven siblings, among them fellow rapper Stefflon Don. He moved back to Clapton, London, during his early teenage years, where his pronounced Dutch accent quickly earned him the nickname “Dutch,” which he later extended into his performing moniker. Encouraged by friends, he refined his craft and surfaced in 2016 with the single “New Jack City,” a hard-edged trap cut that foregrounded his raw, throaty delivery. Follow-up releases “LOL,” “Let It Breathe,” “Say Narda,” and “Feel the Same” showcased his range, moving fluidly between Afro-swing grooves and more contemplative hip-hop, yet a series of legal setbacks soon stalled his momentum.

When he resurfaced in 2020, Dutchavelli broke through with “Only If You Knew,” a stark drill record that examined his personal setbacks and victories. The track’s widespread online traction led to a collaboration with Tion Wayne and Stormzy on “I Dunno,” which surpassed eighty million streams and was named Track of the Year at GRM Daily’s 2020 Rated Awards. Capitalizing on that visibility, he scored further successes with “Surely,” “Burning,” and “Bando Diaries” before completing work on his debut mixtape. Dutch from the 5th delivered a taut survey of his drill aesthetic, intercut with introspective trap passages and candid storytelling.
