Canadian indie rock outfit Casper Skulls first surfaced in 2015, blending earthy dream pop and shoegaze textures with jittery post-punk edges and expansive alternative-rock dynamics. Their initial full-length release, Mercy Works, surfaced in 2017 and secured a SOCAN Songwriting Prize nod thanks to the track “Lingua Franca.” Two years later the quartet returned with the broader, more polished Knows No Kindness.

The project began in Toronto when Sudbury-rooted multi-instrumentalists and life partners Neil Bednis and Melanie St-Pierre assembled the lineup by recruiting bassist Fraser McClean and drummer Chris Anthony. Drawing from the approaches of Pavement, Arcade Fire, My Bloody Valentine, and Sonic Youth, the four-piece sharpened its live presentation on Toronto stages, eventually signing with Buzz Records and unveiling the 2016 EP Lips & Skull. The following year Mercy Works arrived to favorable notices across Canada and overseas for its raucous yet intricately layered fusion of shoegaze-inflected noise rock and articulate indie pop. Opening slots with Thurston Moore, the Julie Ruin, PUP, and Charly Bliss further boosted their profile, leading to the 2021 release of Knows No Kindness and its ethereal single “Thesis.”
