In the mid-1990s New York house producer, DJ and label executive Peter Rauhofer achieved a degree of mainstream breakthrough under the Club 69 alias, an overtly provocative electronica identity he created both for his own output and to feature a wide array of collaborators. He handled primary production duties for the 1995 release Adults Only and the 1997 album Style, although co-producers such as Eric Kupper and vocalists including Kim Cooper also contributed. Even so, most public notice centered on Rauhofer’s own boundary-pushing, house-infused electronica records. Those albums, however, largely followed the pattern of countless mid- to late-1990s electronica projects that sought to repackage club sounds for broader audiences, offering only one or two standout tracks apiece; among the better-known cuts were “Let Me Be Your Underwear,” “Alright” and “Muscles.” Consistent with the suggestive artwork and themes, the material deliberately courted a gay male listenership, and Rauhofer leveraged that Club 69 momentum to establish Star 69 Records while building a New York-focused DJ career.
