Emerging as one of house music’s standout talents by the close of the 1990s after already logging ten years in the scene, Cevin Fisher has delivered an expanding catalog of dance-floor staples such as “Freaks Come Out,” “(You Got Me) Burnin’ Up,” “Music Saved My Life,” and “House Music.” His DJ career began in his teenage years, first at his father’s New Jersey bar and assorted college events, then at Club Zanzibar, the legendary hub of garage music. Relocating to New York in the late ’80s, he took on production roles at Motown and at Arthur Baker’s Shakedown Studios. At Danny Tenaglia’s urging he launched his own recording career, issuing early anthems such as “House Is a Feeling” under the Sunday School alias and “Hands on Love,” both of which echoed the spirit of pioneers Tony Humphries and Larry Heard. Initial releases “The Way We Used To” and “Shine the Light” circulated widely on international dance floors, yet it was 1998’s “The Freaks Come Out” that elevated him to the upper tier of mainstream house. Licensed to no fewer than five separate labels, the track cemented his standing as a polished craftsman known for standout vocal treatments. Two collections surfaced in 1999: the mixed set Dangerous Disco and the Nervous label anthology Cevin Fisher’s Nervous Tracks. The following year brought Underground 2000 on Razor & Tie. Additional credits include remixes for Quincy Jones, Chaka Khan, Robert Miles, and Kevin Aviance.
