Biography
Rap group Coast Contra blends the laid-back, sunlit tones of vintage West Coast hip-hop from the 1990s with intricate wordplay and subtle R&B textures. The lineup features the twin sons of rapper Ras Kass and soul singer Teedra Moses. Their initial single appeared in 2019, followed by the 2022 debut studio album Apt. 505.
Rappers Ras and Taj Austin established Coast Contra after growing up in a household steeped in music through their parents' industry work. During high school the Austin brothers joined rapper Rio Loz to start crafting tracks together. Once they finished school, the three added Eric Jamal as the fourth member, and the full quartet settled into a shared Los Angeles apartment where they refined their material. The first official Coast Contra release arrived in 2019 with the old-school-leaning track "Queen & Slim," which landed on the soundtrack for the film of the same title and included a guest verse by BJ the Chicago Kid. Throughout 2021 the group issued additional singles and closed the year with the 10,000 Hours mixtape. Their debut studio album Apt. 505 arrived in 2022, titled after the Los Angeles unit that housed the members during the project's early stages. The record gathered several prior singles and showcased appearances from Travis Walker, Sakari, and additional guests.
