In 2009 Dan Svizeny, a bedroom-based musician from Philadelphia, launched the Cough Cool project whose name derived from a Misfits track yet whose sound drew primarily from lo-fi’s fuzzy textures and shoegaze’s dreamy atmosphere rather than any punk lineage. Reverb-soaked drum machines and a range of scratchy guitar timbres defined the approach. Early Cough Cool material surfaced on cassettes and downloads through assorted labels, among them the 2009 releases Buy Some Dust and Digestible Doom, 2010’s Epic Dreams, a split with Wild Safari, and a concise self-titled set that reached vinyl in 2011. After this run of recordings, Lately appeared in 2011 and served as the first proper album from an act already stocked with material. Around the same time Jon Mack came aboard as the second member, and the duo jointly recorded the 2013 follow-up 29.
