Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, Crybaby formed in 2001 after the breakup of several area acts and set out to pursue more expansive artistic goals. The lineup of C.J. Bargamian on guitar, Mark Carbone on drums, Daniel Winn on bass, and Kelly Sirmans handling vocals and guitar began blending dream pop and space rock elements, yielding a sound that felt enigmatic and creatively warped. Sirmans delivered vocals reminiscent of PJ Harvey and Portishead’s Beth Gibbons, while the group as a whole produced a rich, layered sonic palette. Local performances throughout the Atlanta region helped the band establish recognition, and their independently issued EPs—Crybaby, Insignificant Insight, and Live at the Star Bar—extended that initial momentum. After signing with the city-based imprint Two Sheds Music, Crybaby released their debut studio album, No Means Yes, during spring 2002.
