Darius Brooks has earned recognition across a long career in contemporary gospel through multiple Dove, Stellar, and Grammy awards. Chicago, Illinois, is his birthplace, where his mother and godparents raised him alongside fourteen siblings. Music and church life drew him in early, leading him to grow into a vocalist, songwriter, pianist, choir director, arranger, and producer. His mother, herself a respected accompanist for Mahalia Jackson and Albertina Walker, connected him with Rev. Milton Brunson, after which he joined the Thompson Community Singers, known also as the Tommies, and stayed with them for well over a decade. His first album, Simply Darius, came out on Detroit’s Sound of Gospel label during those years and entered Billboard’s gospel chart in 1990. Later releases such as Your Will in 2004 and My Soul in 2006 arrived only sporadically, yet he stayed busy running his own imprint, Journey Music Group, and contributing to projects by Ricky Dillard, Shirley Caesar, Vickie Winans, and R&B performers Avant and Avery Sunshine.
