Biography
Pastor Marvin Winans first gained recognition through his role in the Winans, the quartet that not only represented the First Family of contemporary Black gospel but also established the groundwork for the family's expanding gospel enterprise in the early 1980s. Rather than prioritizing individual releases, he channeled his abilities as a vocalist, keyboardist, songwriter, and producer into numerous Winans family endeavors as well as recordings by other gospel artists throughout the 1980s and 1990s. In the early 1990s he established The Perfecting Church in Detroit, which began with services held primarily in local hotels yet attracted a congregation exceeding 3,000 members by the close of the decade. Although solo ventures never became his central pursuit, Winans has periodically directed his own recordings, beginning with the 1992 album Introducing Perfected Praise. That release showcased his newly formed Perfected Praise Choir in a widely praised, intricately orchestrated exploration of mass-choir gospel. His next project arrived in spring 2001 with the album Friends, issued through his sister Angie Winans' Against the Flow label.
