With a vocal style echoing Stevie Wonder in both tone and nimble phrasing, Tim Bowman, Jr. works as a contemporary gospel singer and songwriter. Drawing elements from pop, soul, alt-rock, and additional genres, he followed his well-received 2012 debut album with the 2016 release Listen, which reached the top of the Billboard gospel chart and earned the Grammy for Best Gospel Album. After affiliating with Mike and Dee Dee Freeman Ministries, Bowman issued the joint project Welcome to Faith City in 2022. He performed lead vocals on several tracks, among them the 2023 single “Nobody but God,” which entered the gospel Top 30.

Detroit, Michigan, is where he was born and raised; his father, Tim Bowman, maintains a career as a Billboard-charting jazz/gospel musician, while his father’s sister, popular gospel singer Vickie Winans, is his paternal aunt. Church choirs formed his early performing environment, and during his teenage years he appeared on her single “How I Got Over,” which climbed to number three on Billboard’s Hot Gospel Songs chart. Upon completing his studies at Wayne State University in Detroit, he issued his first album, 2012’s Beautiful, through Trippin ’N’ Rhythm Records. His father handled production, and the set incorporated influences from pop, soul, R&B, and alternative rock; it earned strong notices and reached the Top Ten of the Gospel Albums chart. The track “He Will,” featuring Vickie Winans, also registered on the gospel song chart.

Bowman joined Lifestyle Music Group in 2014, after which the celebratory single “I’m Good” appeared in early 2015. Listen arrived the next year, securing both the summit of the Billboard gospel chart and the Grammy Award for Best Gospel Album.

He married during this period, and in 2018 he and his spouse received ordination as pastors at Mike and Dee Dee Freeman’s Spirit of Faith Christian Center in the D.C. area. Serving among the music and choir directors, he oversaw the 2022 worship album Welcome to Faith City drawn from the congregation, with solo contributions from Le’Andria Johnson, Maranda Curtis, and Kim Burrell. The rock-edged 2023 single “Nobody But God” placed Bowman in the lead vocal role and entered Billboard’s Hot Gospel Songs chart at number 23.
