Dave Tarrida joined forces with fellow Scottish producers Tobias Schmidt and Neil Landstrumm to turn Edinburgh into a hub for dark, quirky experimental techno aimed squarely at the dancefloor. Long before he began releasing his own material, Tarrida concentrated on nurturing the local scene and supporting Schmidt, Landstrumm, and additional talents as they entered production. His central position within the techno community took shape in 1991 through the launch of the weekly club night Sativa, which continued until 1996 and stood as Edinburgh’s leading showcase for the genre; resident acts such as Schmidt and Landstrumm appeared live while visiting selectors including Claude Young and DJ Hell handled the decks, with Tarrida himself both spinning and directing operations. After the night’s early momentum became clear, he co-founded the Sativae label alongside Steve Glencross in 1993, later adding the Drought and Penalty imprints and issuing debut material from Schmidt, Landstrumm, Christian Vogel, and others. Once Sativa outgrew its original scale in 1996, Tarrida shifted focus toward an international DJ schedule that soon spanned Europe and reached America, while simultaneously stepping into production with his Pujol alias and the Chupacabre EP on Scandinavia. His first appearance on the established Tresor roster arrived in 1998 via the Test EP recorded with Tobias Schmidt, followed by further EPs on Tresor and additional outlets. Relocating from Edinburgh to Barcelona in 1999 marked a decisive advance; there he began shaping his debut album Paranoid, which Tresor issued in 2001 and which placed him firmly among the experimental techno artists—Landstrumm and Schmidt among them—whose careers he had helped initiate years earlier.
