Biography
Born in Chile on February 29, 1976, Claudia Ogalde performs under the stage name Deetah, taken from her childhood nickname Claudita. Political unrest prompted her family to move to Stockholm when she turned six, and her father had worked there as a school music instructor. Early in her twenties she contributed vocals to tracks by major rap figures including Tupac and Notorious B.I.G., most notably the chorus of “Runnin’,” as well as to recordings by Ophélie Winter and to material issued by the group Goldmine. Her first album, Deadly Cha Cha, appeared in 1998 and yielded the singles “Relax,” built around samples from Dire Straits’ “Why Worry,” and “El Paraiso Rico,” which drew from Madonna’s “La Isla Bonita.” Tracks of hers have also surfaced on assorted compilations and on the 1998 film soundtrack for the hit movie I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.
